Anti-Muslim protest date set
Date: 17th September 2009A date for an anti-Muslim protest in Glasgow has been set, as first warned by the Scottish-Islamic Foundation on Monday.
A ‘Scottish Defence League’ has been set up in parallel to the equivalently named organisation in England. They have announced a protest on 14th November, 1.00-2.30pm at an as yet unnamed location. As of 11am today, less than 24 hours after it was set up, 129 people have confirmed their attendance at it on Facebook.
The EDL and associated groups have organised a string of protests in towns and cities in England recently, including outside mosques. Banners have included ‘no more mosques’.
The SIF is mobilising a response to the protest in coordination with mosques, organisations and police. An emergency public meeting has been arranged for next week to discuss arrangements for the day.
Commenting, Asif Ahmed, chair of the SIF said:
“This is time for Scotland to once again show we will not be divided by extremists. We have faced worse and come through it. The last time Glasgow was tested was at the 2007 airport attack. What we saw then was all strands of society coming together for a remarkable show of solidarity in George Square. We’ll be working again to make sure that the numbers peacefully opposing extremism will far outstrip that of the haters.”
